description

Following decision 5/COP15 of the COP to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the Secretariat has developed a Youth Engagement Strategy (YES) to ensure stronger, effective, and meaningful participation of youth in the meetings and processes of the Convention.

The UNCCD YES envisions a future where each successive generation of young people is aware, capacitated, and empowered to fully engage with policies and integrated approaches to land restoration that can support multistakeholder action and positive outcomes for livelihoods, communities, nature, biodiversity, and climate.

The commitment aims to:

  • Facilitating the participation of the youth in UNCCD decision-making processes and having a strong voice in the broader policy discussions on land use and governance.
  • Enabling the youth to assist countries and communities in combatting desertification, land degradation, and drought.
  • Empower the youth to create opportunities for sustained engagement, resulting in leadership positions and meaningful jobs and careers that generate shared prosperity from sustainable land and water management practices.

For its implementation, the Parties and stakeholders have identified the following strategic objectives:

  • SO1: Advance youth-focused policies for the implementation of the UNCCD.
  • SO2: Support meaningful participation and partnerships.
  • SO3: Provide dedicated financial and technical support to young people.
  • SO4: Build capacity and support networking for the youth.
