description

Prince’s Trust International partners with organisations around the world to adapt and deliver education, employment, and enterprise programmes. Programmes focus on developing skills, such as communication, teamwork, problem solving and confidence to fill the gap identified by employers and young people. We are working with employers and technical experts to adapt employment and enterprise programmes to inspire and support young people into green careers.

We know from our report on young people’s attitudes towards the future of work, An Upskill Struggle, that 73% of young people are interested in working in the green economy while 75% have an interest in starting their own business. By March 2025, we will support 33,021 young people through employability and entrepreneurship programmes, with over 55% of these programmes focused on the green economy. Our Enterprise Challenge programme includes green modules, which inspire young people to create green businesses and we are working to add circular economy and sustainable business practice content into our Explore Enterprise programme, to support young people at business launch stage to make their businesses more sustainable. As a result, we expect at least 200 green businesses to be created.

Our Get Into employability programme partners with employers in various sectors, including those in emerging green sectors to support unemployed young people to develop the necessary skills and move into decent and, where possible, green jobs. We anticipate that at least 50% of participants will move into decent work, with 7% of those in the green economy.

Challenges faced in implementation

It has been challenging to identify sufficient green job opportunities to focus the majority of employability programmes on green sectors. In many countries these industries remain small but are steadily growing so we expect the number of opportunities to grow year on year. In order to track whether jobs secured and business created are in the green sector we ask partners to report on this information however we often find this data is missing. This is often because the young person my not share this detail with partners, or capacity within partners limits the time that can be spent on data entry. We will continue to encourage this data collection and sharing so we can have a better picture of the types of jobs young people move into.
