The Future of Work, Youth Employment and South-South Cooperation (BAPA+40 Side Event)

As a contribution to the BAPA+40 and in harmonisation with ILO’s Centenary celebration, this event will revolve around two strategic themes of Youth Employment and the Future of Work. Young people are considered as the world’s driver of change and a key stakeholder in the realisation of the Agenda 2030. The side event will look into the challenges of young women and men in the changing context of the Future of Work.

The Global Commission on the Future of Work launched on the 22nd of January 2019 its report, and one of the axis of its “Human-Centred Agenda” is “increase investment in peoples’ capabilities, and describes it is critical to: “Step up investments in the institutions, policies and strategies that will support people through future of work transitions, building pathways for youth into labour markets (…)”. This reaffirms the importance of a youth-centred development cooperation. Discussions at the side event will also take into account the elements of the Financing for Development agenda, present in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA), which focus on youth and South-South cooperation. The main objective of the discussion will be to link the future of work reflection with the South-South and triangular cooperation and new paths for youth employment policies post BAPA + 40.
